Paper Bag Popcorn

If you are a popcorn lover, you may think that you need to buy a popper or purchase those microwave bags. Guess what? You can save money by using the microwave with popping corn and plain brown paper bags. Seriously. Even better, you know what's in it! You can add your own toppings (or choose to go the most healthful route and eat it plain with no salt or butter). There's no telling what's in the butter flavorings they add to those microwave bags. Sure, we all enjoy the movie theater taste at the theater, but I for one am ready to start cutting back on processed, fake, chemical junk at home.

Notice I said cut back, I'm not ready to take the plunge yet and clean out my cabinets. Rome wasn't built in a day, right? It's the little changes that start leading to other little changes that start adding up to a big difference. This will make a difference in your wallet and your body... that is if you use good judgement in what you put on it.

The trick is finding the right amount to put in the bag. My first try I put a tad too much in the bag (I probably put a tablespoon and a half in it, maybe less I didn't really measure) and some of it got burnt, but not all of it. With different microwave settings and wattage and all that jazz, I'd say play around with it till you find the right amount that works for you. Just fold the top of the bag down a little and let her rip! I set it for two minutes and just listened to the pops for when they slowed down.

I spent $1 on the popping corn and $1 on a pack of 50 brown paper bags, which is already less than the over $2 it costs to get a three-bag box of the ready to microwave stuff. I'm not sure how many bags I'll get out of it, but at least 15 I'm guessing, maybe more. I love saving money!
